CPelao
Yeah. Yeah. Welcome back to the uncanny coconuts.
CLoco
Hey, now you're listening to CLoco and Coco Palau.
Welcome back everybody. Today we're going to revisit the movie dune.
CPelao
that's right now. I don't know if you guys remember for any long-term fans . We did an episode a little while back called did George Lucas steal star wars from dune, where we talked about the inspiration for star wars, which was taken from dune and how there were a lot of similarities
. And if season two, episode 26, did George Lucas steal star wars from dune. But, other than that, the new dune movie just came out on October 22nd, and HBO, max.
And , did you see it yet? What'd you think about it,
CLoco
Actually it was last week because, when this episode comes out,
CPelao
right? And I know I got to watch it. CLoco got to watch it.
CLoco
Saw it
CPelao
I know compared to the original movie, I thought it was kick ass, but I guess without giving away too much, go ahead. Why don't you give us what you liked about it?
Cause I know you have some very specific things you liked about it.
CLoco
yeah, first of all, I saw it on HBO max at home, and I didn't see it.
at the movie theater, but a lot of people probably saw it at the movie theater.
And,
CPelao
You know what?
CLoco
Didn't even realize I actually, I didn't even realize they're going to show it at the same time on HBO, max. It, was just surprised me that it,
was there.
Cause I was going to go to the movie
And then I said, oh, it's here. Let me put it on. And then I go and I'm like, whoa, I just got blown away with . Cinematography
CPelao
yeah, it was everything looked gorgeous.
CLoco
Everything is gorgeous looking the, the people, the effects, spaceships, the worlds, the planets, costumes, the whole thing , what dune, w what the families, yeah.
What is supposed to be,
right? What the whole. Story and the storyline of all this families and these other, all these,
CPelao
it a space, politics, political world, right?
CLoco
Yeah. All these,
CPelao
It to
CLoco
That now I saw it visually in a way that it just any look to me, I just loved that. Th, that type of filmmaking, because his is very, even though its SciFi is very realistic looking,
CPelao02:24
Everything. The spaceships all had, I don't know, a rugged, but natural look to them. They didn't look too CGI. They didn't look too superficial. I kinda liked, I don't know about you, but I really liked their, I give their version of a helicopter. Like those mosquitoes.
CLoco
Yeah. They looked like insects or.
CPelao
Which, from what I, I remember reading that was how Frank Herbert originally described those spaceships or those vehicles in his books. I don't know if you knew that.
CLoco
yeah, the ships I, and the design and the whole design of the , technology was beautiful, which is very nice. And the director, how do you pronounce his last name? Dennis Vela. New
CPelao
it looks like then his vision you knew,
CLoco
Virgin you is
CPelao
guess he's French yet. Vision. Neuve.
CLoco
Yeah, he's French. Anyway, he's done blade runner,
CPelao
Yeah, he did a few
CLoco
the new one.
CPelao
runner. He did Sicario rival.
CLoco
his, arrival, which was, the movie had that, that feeling of realism and this movie had that same, realistic look to this future world, which was, it was just amazing. He could get nominated,
CPelao
Cinematography.
CLoco
Oscars for cinematography. Definitely.
CPelao
So Friday night I'm going to bed, was after midnight. And I remembered this. I go, wait a minute. I think dune was supposed to be released today. By that time it was 22nd. And since I'm already in bed, I go, you know what, let me just pull up HBO max on my phone.
And I see that it was available to play. So I started playing it. And dude, from the first minute, I'm like, Oh, my God. Look at this, like the big, the big pan shots and you could tell this whole world, and I turned it off. I was like, I can't watch this shit on my little phone. I can't. I refuse to, it was like, it's not worth it.
So if you can get to an IMAX, I gotta admit I haven't gotten out to a movie theater yet, and I saw it on my 60 inch TV. And I still think that wasn't big enough. Like you really want to get a nice, huge
CLoco
yeah, big screen I have a second solution for that. If you can't get to an IMAX or watch.
it on a big screen, there's some other theaters that have bigger screens than the regular screen. If you can't see it there, you get an Oculus.
CPelao
yeah.
CLoco
Get a VR headset, right. Get online, login to you, HBO max, and watch it on Oculus.
And you'll see it. iMac.
CPelao
Did you get to try that
CLoco
Oh, I didn't try it. I've seen other movies
CPelao
on HBO though?
CLoco
On
CPelao
On Netflix though?
CLoco
no, it's not. I need to be on a, on Netflix. I saw
CPelao
Cause I know Netflix has an app on the Oculus..
CLoco
Oh, you're saying if it works, on the browser,
CPelao
it does it actually work
CLoco
I've gone through the browser to watch videos on Oculus plus,
CPelao
But but usually on YouTube.
CLoco
YouTube. And,
CPelao
All right. I guess we'll have to test
CLoco
I've gotten on a website. You can go on the Oculus and go on the browser and watch and just click on full screen
CPelao
Oh, okay. Hey, it's worth a
CLoco
So this version of dune it's a remake, right? It's not a continuation or.
CPelao
Correct?
CLoco
So this remake it's, off the charts. The critics, it's already 83% rate it by critics on I am DB is rated 83%, I think it is. And on rotten tomatoes is 83% or 84% which is crazy high, because anything over 90% is Oscar, usually on rotten tomatoes. And, the on-ramp tomatoes, the audience score is 96% it's fucking.
CPelao
Again, I know we're trying not to give to, a whole lot of way if you haven't seeing it. But I guess first thing I want to say that compared to that 19, what was it? 19 83, 19 84 movie, which is currently available on HBO max. Oh my God. What a difference? What a difference. Besides the fact that I think they, they really got into the weeds in that old movie and they tried to explain to them.
And it just made it everything convoluted and weird looking. The new movie I thought did a great job. They actually didn't get into a lot of the real, weird technical stuff that they did in the first movie, which I thought was great because you don't really see a lot of that throughout the whole movie anyway, like the navigators or anything like that,
CLoco
yeah. Yeah. And I think there's a reason. Because I haven't read up on the dune, w this, you dune, but I'm thinking that they are doing, a series for this one.
Doing more than one movie. So they're going to leave some of that information for the next movie.
CPelao
We'll just get, cause it wasn't really relevant to this first part anyway,
CLoco
no, this is a better introduction to the story than the first movie. I think they try to put everything on one movie And
it just didn't work.
CPelao
they screwed the pooch on that one, man and the only spoiler, that I'll give out, I don't think it was much of a spoiler, which is you're really getting like a third of the original movie. Just when it starts getting really good and really picking up pretty much the movie ends, which I'm sure you've heard it on all the other things, but it was definitely worth it.
Just great recap, great energy. my only negative, I definitely give it at least a what a nine out of 10 I would give it. Even though I can say may have been a little bit slow paced in certain aspects. I didn't really find a slow pace, but I can see where it can come off. Other than that though, dude, everything was great.
Like you said, the graphics, the storyline, you actually, I think understood what the hell was going on with politics.
CLoco
Yeah. It was a little bit, more, understandable,
CPelao
right?
CLoco
the storyline. I don't know if I would give it nine out of 10 though. Cause that's high.
CPelao
I enjoyed it.
CLoco0
. I would give it eight point.
CPelao
Okay. And why he point to what, what brought it down for you
CLoco08:20
Nothing brought it down.
CPelao
then? There
CLoco
my rating.
CPelao
why was it so why wasn't it a 10 for you or a closer to nine
CLoco
Oh, whoa. Why isn't it a 10? Because nothing's perfect in life, you can't give it a 10. To be a 10, it's
CPelao
a nine? so, why not a nine?
CLoco
oh, why not a nine, because nine.
is almost perfect. And.
CPelao
So you can't give it a nine either. Oh, what was the highest, what was the highest number you would give it out of 10 regularly says you don't believe in perfection and in near
CLoco
oh, what's the highest number of we give to anything. Oh, 9.9.
CPelao
Then why would he give this a 9.9? What brought it up Sunday? Brought it.
CLoco
Oh, you mean this?
CPelao
No. Yep. Oh my God. Yes. This one
CLoco
Oh, because what might've brought it down was it was a little slow paced, Right.
At certain times. The story on its own, even if it's perfectly, done on a screen. On a screenplay or let's say, on the movie theater, the story itself, it's a little odd to me.
It's not, I'm not a fan of the story. Like some other people are, some people are really true fans of the story, and I never read the book. So to me, that brings it down because know, it's not as exciting star wars had this adventure. Type of feeling to it, right? This one is more of a deep story.
It's very psychological, it's a different feeling,
CPela
I agreed. It's a completely different vibe and you know what?
CLoco
but yeah, but it's not adventure. Ooh, it's not a feel good
CPelao
It's not it's again, it's got more political drama to it. It's about, if you think about it, it's closer to game of Thrones, blood wedding than it was to, star wars, in terms of
CLoco
yeah. It's right. It's not you're right. It's like a serious drama Scifi and it has a lot of tragedy?
CPelao
Serious overtones,
CLoco
And in that respect, I'm not giving it a high score
but anything over eight to me, it's, near Oscar.
CPelao
So you got like a grading curve, over, so your aid is really more a nine that you're saying,
CLoco
I'm going to have to break it down into the same Oscar categories, so cinematography is like 9.6.
CPelao
Okay.
CLoco
I would have to give, and technology and CGI 9.7. It was beautiful.
But then the other categories, the acting was reacting was great. So I think I would probably give it an 8.5, and then, the story of would have to give her 8.08. You know what I mean? And then you do an average, if you do an average, all those, it.
comes out to 8.2,
CPelao
What were the numbers you just gave a technical? It will be a little higher, but I know you're not good at math. I'm not gonna hold that against you, but you know what?
CLoco
that I left out some categories.
CPelao
Okay. Fair enough. Fair. But you know what? I was going to say, I got him with the only thing. So what brought it down to a nine for me again, the fact that it was a little bit slow and the fact that I knew going into.
They were going to cut it short. This was probably a rant for another day, but I hate the fact when movies, it's a longer movie than what it is and they cut it short for movies sake. So for example, I'll give you my best example. I know we talked about this, the load of the rings, that whole movie trilogy, right?
There's a lot of people that really love that trilogy. I got to tell you the first time I went to the movie theater to see the Lord. And I think didn't, they won a few awards for cinematography and stuff like that.
CLoco
Yeah.
CPelao
The first time I went to see it, I had never read or really seen or heard too much of the stories that a lot of people loved, but I didn't really know a lot about them. And I went to see this what two and a half, almost three hour movie. And I sat through it and I enjoyed it. And then at the end of that first movie, they're walking into the distance and then it ends.
And I remember going, what the fuck? That's it? And they go, yeah. Yeah, there was only part one of three and do it. I got so pissed. I got so pissed because I was like, what dude, if I want to know this was one of the three, I wouldn't have bothered watching this shit.
CLoco
What, why not?
CPelao
it just left you on a cliffhanger.
They just made it a third of the way through the movie or through the book and then we're going to stop it here, and it was like, I know I'm going to have to wait five years to finish watching this shit.
CLoco
Listen, dune is doing the same thing.
CPelao
I know. That's part of what brought it a little bit down for me, even though.
CLoco
there. They're doing the same thing at the end. I didn't even realize, but at the end I'm like, it didn't even feel like two and a half hours.
CPelao
It did it,
CLoco
Yeah. it, went quicker. And then at the end it goes, this is just the beginning.
And he ends and I'm like, what the hell happened?
CPelao
Yeah. there you go. You didn't like that feeling, did you like, yeah, I'd just been taken for a ride, but you know what? I guess the only thing that prepared me mentally, I had read a few of the reviews. I had read that they do cut it short. So I knew that was going to happen. And that was the only thing that kind of mentally prepared me for it.
But in all fairness, I will say that I felt like they ended it at a good point for the movie. It didn't leave too many cliffhangers, but it didn't really answer too many questions either. That was my only real grip about it. I hate it when movies do that, like I know my sister, she loved the Harry Potter movies.
And I think it was the sixth one or the seventh one that they split it into two. The six book part one and part two. And dude, she refused she was like, fuck them. I ain't going to see it. Cause they had pushed it back to Halloween and split it on purpose into two different movies.
But it was the same book. Oh, she was so upset. So I get upset about the same thing,
CLoco
yeah. That's the thing. If they take too long to come up with the CQL, because there's a cliffhanger or, it's expected, you want to see the rest and it take more than six months to come up with it. Oh my God, sometimes regular series take a.
CPelao
I
CLoco
A regular TV show. It takes a year to come back, imagine a movie. So if he takes too long to come back, that people lose interest,
CPelao
And what actually didn't you have a good or remember? We did have a quick conversation on this before, and you made a good point that you were like, why don't movie theaters? If they know it's going to be a long movie or it needs to be broken up into parks, come out with it every every three to six months, instead of making us wait one or two years.
CLoco
If they know that the movie is going to be a three, three series,
CPelao
I think parts
CLoco
If it was star wars, like sours, if they know it's going to be a three parter, they should already have it planned out to have the second one already half done. When this one is getting promoted this one goes out and then it goes through the Oscar.
Comes out in October, Oscar, January, and then it gets all the.
CPelao
Accolade the
CLoco
the other, the second one. Yeah, the accolades. So depending on how popular it becomes, but the second one should be already more than halfway done and
then release that right.
before summer or Right. at the beginning of summer, or at least the second one.
Before that release, you're promoting the trailers and this. Writing and hyping it up and hyping it up. So people are like expecting to see it
CPelao
there for dinner, at a frenzy to see the next one.
CLoco
Yeah. And then I forgetting the first one because the first one just went through the Oscars.
People are watching it again. So we're usually in February after the Oscars. Yeah. Watch the movie again, if you've already watched it. And for those that didn't watch it, they usually watch it after the Oscars. So that's, askers is a big promotion for a movie that's hasn't been watched.
So you got February and March two months that people would watch it again. And then in April, may, Everybody's going to go see it, everybody, because then now all these people have seen it. They're expecting to see the second part.
CPelao
And it's still fresh in everybody's mind.
CLoco
yeah, it's first in everybody's mind.
And then you get a big summer hit for that second one. And then the third one should be half done in December. And then you wait, the second one is going to get nominated for the Oscars in the next year, January. Then you wait after that second Oscar for the second movie.
And then after the Oscars, you released the third one, the final, and then you promote it like, hell, because it's the final trilogy. And then you have a successful trilogy after that. And he only took a year and now.
CPelao16:51
there you go. That's probably the way it should be done. Cause then the other thing I pointed out I remember is, this is where, movie can go to shit. If something happens to the major actors,
CLoco
Exactly. You wait too long. you don't know, what's going to happen.
CPelao
Knock on wood. I know, obviously we don't wish any demise on anyone,
CLoco
no, the best thing is
CPelao
of the star they
CLoco
Let them. Keep on filming throughout the whole year, throughout the year and a half. Give them a little break and then go to the next movie. I get just keep on filming. So that way in a year and a half, they're done with all three,
CPelao
right.
CLoco
And, and that's it, man. That's the way it should be done. But sometimes they drag it out and they drag it out and then it's not.
CPelao
So farming good for them. I just read some news reports today that, dune right now is the number one movie in north America. They're projecting is going to make 40 million. At the box office,
CLoco
What about the other countries first, right? You said,
How did it do or what was those just film Fest.
CPelao
Here goes the weird part, I've been reading reviews on this. Since September early September and looking at the release info, it has been released everywhere in the whole world. And the U S was like one of the last ones. So it started getting released in a bunch of film festivals in Italy
CLoco
Yeah. I told you why that was right, because the U S we're like the worst country to keep a secret.
CPelao
I don't know if that was the real reason, that'd be good to, I would love to verify that it was true. Yeah, so it's been showing all over the world in Austria, came on September 15 in Belgium and Switzerland for the 15th and France, Norway, Sweden, again, Germany, Denmark, Hong Kong on the 16th
CLoco
Yeah. But I'm wondering how did it do on those countries? Does it say
CPelao
Now what I had looked up, I guess we should look it up.
CLoco
Yeah, I wonder, it did 40 million here, right? And then I'm wonder what it did in Europe. Asia, like a wonder, but.
CPelao
Let's see, let's just do a, do an international box office and let's see what that says so far. Doing bumps up in China was 16 million through Saturday, so
CLoco
or 60.
CPelao
million. So international box office leads with 47 million. So they're up to 47 million internationally. And that was on, today, October 24th.
So that's pretty good. So they're doing pretty good so far.
CLoco
Oh, in one day.
CPelao
That's internationally. So they came out and all of these other markets, it looks like, let me see. The biggest turnout has been in China
CLoco
yeah. Compared to other scifi adventure, blockbuster movies is really not that much.
CPelao
But there's just,
CLoco
Oh, this is just a weekend, right.
CPelao
The first weekend sales.
CLoco
Yeah. We'll see.,
CPelao
Right now, it's saying
They're doing, 180 million internationally and 220 million globally. So actually they pretty much probably made up their money already.
CLoco
I think that's a really good because that's, it's only the weekend and if they already did that internationally, but even though released over there sooner
CPelao
Oh, yeah, dude, October 22nd, it came out in the U S
CLoco
And
CPelao
everywhere
CLoco
Now that's only half of what they're going to make because the other half is the action figures. And when they come up with the action figures for this new dune stuff and the new Dune spaceships and the new character.
And that's going to, they're going to make people, don't never talk about how much money they action figures make
It makes millions actually it makes trillions of dollars.
CPelao
Look at star wars stories. I absolutely did. has been selling merchandise toys and light sabers and guns for 50 fucking years or whatever it is.
CLoco
merchandise, overall merchandise. It makes more than the movie. That's a big industry.
CPelao
All right.
CLoco
CPelao
Alright. So Wrap it up, brother.
CLoco
Thank you for listening.
See you next time.
CPelao
Ciao.
CLoco
Bye. Ciao. Hey now.
You next time. And I have.
CPelao
Why do you got to see that?
CLoco
'cause I want to end stuff like that now on, See you next time I, have spoken
